Ubuntu e più in generale i sistemi GNU/Linux dispongono di una enorme varietà di programmi, la maggior parte dei quali è disponibile liberamente e gratuitamente.

La capitolo successivo riassume invece le alternative libere a diffusi programmi proprietari, a prescindere dal sistema operativo sul quale vengono eseguiti.
Vale la pena di notare che moltissimi programmi liberi che funzionano su Linux possono funzionare, previa ricompilazione, su MacOSX (che è un sistema Unix, proprio come GNU/Linux) e anche su Windows usando Cygwin. Spesso è possibile trovarli in Internet già ricompilati.
