Behind Ubuntu: Matt Zimmerman

Recentemente Behind Ubuntu si è incontrato con il-mai-così-famoso Matt Zimmerman, per una veloce conversazione faccia a faccia. L' intervista ha riguardato la partecipazione di Matt alla comunita' Ubuntu, l' Open Source, cosi' come la sua vita privata. Il Free Desktop raggiunge i 10 anni

Il free desktop compie questa settimana i 10 anni di età, avendo KDE celebrato il suo decimo compleanno sabato 14 Novembre. In onore di questo importante anniversario, i vostri infaticabili sviluppatori di Kubuntu sono tutti rimasti a casa a correggere bug in tempo per il rilascio della release candidate di Edgy. Ma, in un magazzino da qualche parte nella lontana Baviera, i migliori sviluppatori di software libero si sono incontrati per fare festa al "10 years of Linux Desktop".

Uno degli speakers principali è stato Jono Bacon, Ubuntu Community Manager, il quale ha annunciato che Mark Shuttleworth e' diventato il primo "Patron of KDE" (Patrono di KDE). Questa prestigiosa onorificenza è il simbolo di una duratura partecipazione sia finanziaria sia sociale a KDE. Grazie a Mark per aver aderito a questo nuovo schema.

Durante il party Jono ha vinto un libro in tedesco su Qt 4. Non parlando lui tedesco, regalerà questo libro alla persona che scriverà la migliore applicazione Qt 4.

Argomenti da trattare al prossimo development summit

Nel dare il via al successivo ciclo di sviluppo, Matt Zimmerman ha annunciato la richiesta degli argomenti da discutere al prossimo summit di sviluppo, che sarà tenuto all' inizio di Novembre presso il quartier generale di Google, a Mountain View, California. Gli argomenti discussi riguarderanno la prossima versione di Ubuntu, prevista per il rilascio in Aprile 2007. Cambiamenti in Edgy

Questa settimana ci ha portato una moltitudine di nuove applicazioni, tra le quali i nuovi Firefox e Open Office, così come una quantità di rifiniture generali per l' imminente rilascio.

Due delle maggiori applicazioni di Ubuntu sono state aggiornate questa settimana. Ian Jackson ha caricato il nuovo firefox 1.99+2.0rc2, la piu' recente release candidate di Firefox 2.0 mentre Mattias Klose ha caricato openoffice.org 2.0.4, la più recente versione stabile di Open Office.

Questa settimana Stephan Hermann ha completato la nuova versione di wine, 0.9.22, che include le consuete correzioni di bug e altri miglioramenti. Potete scoprire di più su http://winehq.org/?announce=1.126.

Per il mondo Zope, Mattias Klose ci ha portato una notevole quantità di nuovi plugin, tra i quali zope-statusmessages 2.0.1, zope-pluginregistry 1.1.1, zope-plonelanguagetool 1.4, zope-plonetranslations 2.6.0, zope-plonepas 2.1, zope-plonetestcase 0.8.4, zope-ploneerrorreporting 1.0, zope-passwordresettool 0.4.1, zope-pas 1.4, zope-kupu 1.3.8, zope-groupuserfolder 3.54, zope-externaleditor 0.9.2, zope-extendedpathindex 2.4, zope-cmfplone 2.5.1, zope-cmfformcontroller 2.0.5, zope-cmfplacefulworkflow 1.0.2, zope-cmfdynamicviewfti 2.1, zope-cmf1.6 1.6.2, zope-atrbw 1.5, zope-atcontenttypes 1.1.3 and zope-archetypes 1.4.1. Per finire, Mattias ha anche caricato zope 2.9.5.

Per quanto riguarda il mondo server, questa settimana sono arrivati alcuni nuovi pacchetti. I blogger saranno felici di sapere che e' finalmente disponibile wordpress 2.0.4. Maggiori informazioni su http://wordpress.org/development/2006/07/wordpress-204/. E' inoltre presente il nuovo mysql 5.0.24a, sincronizzato da Debian.

Ubuntu

Il mondo di Telepathy non si arresta mai, producendo sempre nuovi pacchetti. Questa settimana è stato incluso il contributo di Daniel Holbach su libgalago 0.5.2, galago-daemon 0.5.1 e gaim-galago 0.5.1. Riccardo Setti è entrato in azione con telepathy-gabble 0.3.10, telepathy-butterfly 0.1.2, telepathy-python 0.13.3 e telepathy-stream-engine 0.3.7. Il nuovo e più grosso pacchetto per Telepathy e' stato meta-telepathy, un meta-pacchetto che raggruppa tutti i pacchetti disparati. Daniel Holbach ha caricato questa settimana i pacchetti 1 e 2. Non proprio legata a Telepathy, ma quasi, e' stata la sincronizzazione di gaim-hotkeys 0.2.0 da Debian.

L' artwork di Ubuntu ha subito un grosso cambiamento, con il ritorno all' artwork della versione 6.06, dall' iniziale default di Edgy. Tutto questo e' stato inserito in edgy-gdm-themes 0.5, edgy-session-splashes 0.3 e edgy-wallpapers 0.5, tutti caricati da Daniel Holbach. edgy-wallpapers 0.6 e' arrivato piu' tardi, sono stati rimossi alcuni sfondi del desktop duplicati, cosi' come edgy-gdm-themes 0.6, che contiene uno spazio per i messaggi di pam. L' unica porzione che e' rimasta, tra tutte le novita' di Edgy, sono i nuovi suoni.

Tra le altre note relative all' artwork, Daniel Holbach ha caricato human-theme 0.2, dal quale sono stati separati i cursori che sono finiti nel nuovo pacchetto human-cursors-theme 0.2, anch' esso caricato questa settimana. Il rilascio di human-cursors-theme 0.3 ha corretto il pacchetto in modo che fosse realmente installabile. E' stato finalizzato anche human-icon-theme 0.5, oggetto di alcune attività di ripulitura dei vari SVGs. Più avanti nella settimana è stato finalizzato anche human-icon-theme 0.6, con la riduzione della dimensione dell' icona di netstatus. Sono inoltre arrivati diversi altri pacchetti dalla comunità, tra i quali tropic-look 0.1, peace-look 0.1 e blubuntu-look 0.1.

Kubuntu

Il mondo di Kubuntu questa settimana ha finalmente messo le mani sulla più recente release di KDE, versione 3.5.5, ed è gia' stata aggiunta in tempo per la Release Candidate di Edgy. Anche questo ultimo rilascio e' una release di manutenzione, tuttavia sono presenti alcuni miglioramenti degni di nota. Alcuni di questi miglioramenti sono, tra gli altri: Kopete versione 0.12.3, supporto a sudo in kdesu, maggiore velocita' di KHTML, supporto a CUPS 1.2, e miglioramenti al numero di localizzazioni disponibili. Anche Qt 4.2 ha finalmente fatto capolino in Kubuntu. Questa ultima release di Qt include un ragguardevole numero di miglioramenti, ottimizzazione delle performance e aggiunta di feature. Tra questi: aumentata configurabilità dei widget, maggiore controllo sulla UI; nuove, avanzate cornici 2D; migliore integrazione con l' ambiente desktop GNOME, volta a migliorare l' interoperabilità tra KDE e GNOME. Xubuntu

In Xubuntu, il nuovo sfondo del desktop è stato incluso in xubuntu-default-settings 0.20, cortesia di Gauvain Pocentek. Xubuntu-meta ha ricevuto due aggiornamenti da parte di Jani Monoses, al fine di includere avahi-daemon, linux-printing.org-ppds, util-linux-locales e gcacltool-gtk ad xubuntu-desktop. Più tardi durante la settimana, Colin Watson ha aggiornato di nuovo gli Xubuntu-meta seeds, al fine di rimuovere il target "-live", dato che questo è ora gestito da tasksel.

Tra gli altri pacchetti Xubuntu inclusi: xfwm4 4.3.99.1svn+r23334, una nuova snapshot SVN del gestore finestre di Xubuntu, e system-config-printer 0.7.32, lo strumento di Red Hat/Fedora utilizzato da Xubuntu per la gestione delle stampanti. E' stato inoltre aggiornato python-cups 1.9.13, poichè richiesto da system-config-printer.

Edubuntu

Mirroring the xubuntu changes, edubuntu-meta got updated with avahi-daemon, libgl1-mesa-glx, linuxprinting.org-ppds and onboard added to edubuntu-desktop. There was also an updated edubuntu-artwork 0.1.0 which updated the splash screen.

This week brings two book reviews. The first is of the Apress book, Beginning Ubuntu Linux. The review notes several times that the this book is for new Ubuntu and Linux users and overall gives the book a very favourable review. The second review is of the Official Ubuntu Book. This time by ArsGeek, again giving high reviews and noting the book is very useful for new Ubuntu and Linux users. In their words:

"So should you go out and buy this book? If you’re a Linux/Ubuntu expert then you can probably forgo it. Anyone else who’s interested in Ubuntu either as a primary operating system, or as a means to learn a lot more about Linux should pick this up. It’s a great reference and has everything you’ll need from install to working productively in one easy place. It also comes with the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS DVD, saving the new user from trying to download and burn a copy – a time saver in the least."

[http://os.newsforge.com/os/06/10/06/152232.shtml?tid=16 Newsforge] reported that Nexenta, an open source operating system, is combining the Open Solaris kernel with GNU utilities and Ubuntu in its alpha 5 release.

[http://www.technewsworld.com/story/53513.html Technewsworld] has an article on Ubuntu, where Ubuntu is reported to be similar to the Mac OS X of Linux according to IT-Harvest Chief Research Analyst Richard Stiennon, who also "...downplayed Ubuntu's support for Sun hardware, [saying] it would take a bigger player, such as HP... or Dell... to propel Ubuntu further into the business world, where it potentially could function as leverage against incumbent Red Hat."

Quando si ha il sistema X che nin funziona e non si sa come sistemare la cosa tramite Elinks è possibile per un utente medio navigare all'interno di ubuntuforums.org o del sito italiano ubuntu-it.org senza avere X e trovare la possibile risposta per ripristinare l'ambiente grafico X.

Per installarlo digitare da terminale: sudo apt-get install elinks

Infamous Bugs

Come aiutarci ad "uccidere" un bug che ti infastidisce

Ci sono dei momenti in cui un applicazione non funziona come ci si aspetta. In certi casi questo può essere dovuto alla presenza di un bug al suo interno. Segnalare un bug per la sua risoluzione rende il software migliore.

Quando trovare un bug

Il tempo migliore per cercare ...

The best time to find a bug is early in the programs lifecycle as it is being prepared for the next release, not right at the start but the first snapshot that is taken of the development cycle. You should look at the critical applications in your distro that you use and check they work during the beta cycles. This allows developers iron out the issues before the next release. With the exception of the LTS software we don't expect to see problems resolved after a release is issued, unless it is a security issue. Come segnalarlo

The report should be done as soon as the program terminates incorrectly.

What you need to report.

Information about what you as the user were doing or trying to do before the error occurred. What the expected behaviour was, what the actual behaviour of the program was. What error messages if any occurred, all of them is a good starting point.

To report bugs on Ubuntu, get an account on http://launchpad.net, find the package in the version of ubuntu you have and share the information you have. It is better to report half correctly and let someone else come along and confirm it.

Your first step in this location is to check that the bug has not been reported already. If it has then confirm it for your platform and so on.

Comments can be added after the initial edit, in fact you may be asked for more detail after you report.

Have a look at a few bugs on launchpad to get a feeling for what is usual.

Cosa NON fare

You should not simply report that "Program X is broken", this is not a fault report, it is in fact a "faulty bug report", which means that it is useless. It lacks the essential ingredient, appropriate information.
