It is very efficient because it uses the rsync algorithm and detects if you rename or move files around. There is a GTK+ interface as well in unison-gtk, and there is also an MS Windows version! I just cannot live without it. I used to have all my important documents in a single folder in my work computer (it is about 800MB). I sync everything with my home computer and laptop whenever I start or stop working. Due to the use of rsync, synchronization takes only a few seconds over a DSL connection and is also very efficient over a 56k modem line. rsync alone is very good for synchronizing in one direction (like a backup), but it can be very risky to do two-way synchronizations when you can have files deleted on one side and the other at the same time. Unison takes care of this gracefully and tells you when files have been modified on both sides, so you can select the appropriate version, although this is not a common situation for me. With text files it can also do diffs and merges. Unison is not officially supported by Ubuntu (it is in Universe). Ubuntu really lacks a synchronization utility (maybe there is one I do not know). Unison could be a good choice, although the interface can be improved as well as some behavior, for example some options can only be set by editing the configuration files, and it does not keep partially transferred files or directories, which is very annoying when transferring a new large file or directory for hours and you need to interrupt the process. Pubblicazione della versione Edgy Eft Knot 1
Il 20.06.2006 è la data di rilascio della versione "Edgy Eft Knot 1", che si chiamerà, appena ultimata, Ubuntu 6.10. Knot 1 è la prima milestone disponibile nel ciclo di approntamento di Edgy. Queste milestone, prive di bug d'installazione, sono immagini dell'edizione corrente. Knot 1 è disponibile per Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu e Xubuntu, può essere scaricato rispettivamente:

La variazione più importante da Dapper è l'insieme delle modifiche ereditate da Debian. Comune a tutte le variazioni è l'aggiornamento al kernel 2.6.17. BR In Ubuntu, GNOME è alla versione 2.15.4, mentre GTK+ alla 2.10.

E' una serie d'immagini di prima mano in cui sono evidenti le imperfezioni (bugs), tra le quali ve ne sono alcune che non sarà necessario evidenziare, in quanto già note ai programmatori:
- L'installazione di volumi LVM non va a buon fine: s'interrompe.
La chiusura del CD dimostrativo: il prompt di richiesta di premere <Invio> a conferma della rimozione del medesimo, la legge dal terminale sbagliato. Bisogna agire allora sul tasto di Reset o su quello dell'alimentazione del pc.

Repository commerciali Canonical
Canonical ha annunciato il 6 Luglio 2006 la creazione e l'implementazione dei Repository commerciali. Per abilitare i repository bisogna aggiungere le seguenti linee al file /etc/apt/sources.list:

La Ubuntu BugSquad (Squadra anti-bug di Ubuntu) ha lavorato senza risparmiarsi sulle imperfezioni pervenute al canale IRC #ubuntu-bugs, uno dei canali più impegnati, come hanno potuto verificare in molti. Parecchi volontari hanno contribuito ad abbattere la mole di bug da sistemare.
La risposta alla domanda sul lavoro svolto è stata la seguente:
<nixternal> forniteci qualche risultato dell'Hug Day' di ieri a favore dell'UWN ??? <crimsun> "Abbiamo sistemato qualche imperfezione".
Credo che la risposta si riferisca al lavoro complessivo, ma che i dettagli siano stati trascurati, il tutto ha contribuito a fare un'intervista "down n' dirty" (inqualificabile). BR Appena i risultati saranno disponibili, verranno pubblicati su questa UWN

Opzioni del Pulsante di Arresto del sistema
Suggerito da: Jojoman L'interfaccia GUI di gnome-power-manager non ne prevede l'uso, ma presto lo utilizzerà
([https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/49214 bug #49214]).BR L'opzione di default del pulsante di arresto è la proposta del menù d'uscita "Exit". Gli utenti desiderano invece spegnere immediatamente il computer.BR Seguendo la procedura di seguito esposta si ottiene l'impostazione del pulsante di arresto:
- Premere ALT+F2 (Menù di Avvio).
Digitare: gconf-editor
Trovare la chiave (key): /apps/gnome-power-manager/action_button_power
Modificare una delle voci seguenti: "suspend", "hibernate", "interactive", "shutdown" or "nothing"
Pulsanti del Mouse MS: Intelli Mouse Avanti & Indietro
Suggerimento di: Steven Harms E' interessante scoprire che i pulsanti Avanti e Indietro del mouse della Microsoft Intellimouse operano anche in Dapper. BR Basta modificare il file /etc/X11/xorg.conf come segue:
Primo passo:
cd /etc/X11 sudo gedit xorg.conf
Secondo Passo:
- Usare Gedit per cercare e trovare "Configured Mouse". Rimpiazzare la sezione con:

Prevenzione RSI - Typing Breaks
Suggerito da: John Stowers E' noto che Ubuntu viene distribuito con un'applicazione RSI - avoidance application. [BR]] Con le opportune pause durante la digitazione si evitano i disastri usualmente provocati dall'RSI e dall'uso di programmi che ripetono automaticamente gli input da tastiera. BR L?abilitazione della sosta tra digitazioni ripetitive si effetua in questo modo:
Aprire le preferenze della tastiera: Sistema>>>Menù Preferenze.
- Selezionare la cartellina "Pausa nella digitazione" ed attivare "Bloccare lo schermo per forzare una pausa di digitazione". Si può anche attivare "Consentire la posposizione delle pause" se si desidera ignorare il suggerimento relativo.
- Nell'area delle informazioni apparirà una nuova barra. Posizionando il mouse sull'icona si otterranno le informazioni connesse alle soste di digitazione.

Unison è un'applicazione per la sincronizzazione dei file tra due differenti macchine. BR La sua efficacia è basata su algoritmi che verificano se sono state apportate modifiche ai file. Lavora con un'interfaccia GTK+, con una unison-gtk, ed opera anche in ambiente Windows! E' difficile vivere senza usarlo! Tutti i documenti importanti, di solito, vengono salvati in un'unica cartella di circa 800MB. La sincronizzazione va effettuata all'inizio ed alla chiusura di una giornata di lavoro, tra il computer portatile e quello fisso. La sincronizzazione impiega solo pochi secondi con una connessione DSL, ma anche con il modem a 56k si ottiene una valida prestazione. Rsync è un ottimo sistema di sincronizzazione, ma se usato da solo è molto pericoloso in quanto i file di una delle due macchine vengono cancellati. Unison opera in maniera raffinata, avvertendo l'utente delle variazioni riscontrate e dove, consentendo la scelta di quale eliminare. Unison consente anche il merging e la differenziazione tra i file di testo.BR Unison non viene supportato da UBuntu (si trova nella repository Universe). Si lamenta la mancanza di uno strumento di sincronizzazione (forse l'autore non ne conosce la disponibilità in Ubuntu). Unison rappresenta una valida alternativa anche se l'interfaccia dovrebbe essere migliorata ed altri miglioramenti in genere sarebbero necessari. Alcune opzioni possono essere definite solo modificando il file di configurazione. Non è supportato il trasferimento o la sincronizzazione parziale di file e directory, il che è abbastanza noioso in fase di sincronizzazioni di file di grandi dimensioni. In sintesi è un ottimo programma anche se non convenientemente implementato, usato dall'autore dell'articolo come dimostrato sul suo sito.
