Changes in Edgy

E' stata una settimana tranquilla per Edgy, ci stiamo avvicinando alla versione finale. BR BR Gli utenti di Xen saranno piacevolmente sorpresi nello scoprire che è a disposizione, in questa settimana, la versione xen-3.0 3.0.3~rc1, grazie allo strenuo lavoro di Andrew Mitchell e Chuck Short. A settimana avanzata Andrew ha effettuato l'aggiornamento alla versione rc2. BR BR In questa settimana Fabio M Di Nitto ha effettuato l'upload di un gran numero di cluster, Openais 0.80.1 e redhat-cluster-suite 2.20061002 compresi. L'ultimo upload comprende le modifiche provenienti da un bugsquishing party. BR BR Il mondo della stampa ha ottenuto, in questa settimana, un pò di equilibrio, con l'upload a cura di Till Kamppeter di foomatic-db-engine 3.0.2-20060925, che unisce tutti gli upstream delle modifiche di Ubuntu e Debian. Till ha anche effettuato l'upload di foomatic-db-hpijs 20060925, mentre Martin Pitt ha riunito cupsys 1.2.4 da Debian, con la soluzione di molte anomalie. Finalmente anche cups-pdf 2.4.2 è stata sincronizzata da Debian. BR BR In questa settimana sono stati sincronizzati da Debian una parte dei pacchetti gnustep. Comprendono: BR gnustep-base 1.13.0 BR gnustep-gui 0.11.0 BR gnustep-make 1.13.0. BR BR In ambito Java, libjcommon-java 1.0.6 è pervenuto questa settimana, consentendo al pacchetto di essere inserito in universe, infatti è basato su Free Java. Allo stesso modo Mattias Klose ha effettuato l'upload di libjfreechart-java 1.0.2 che è stato inserito in universe. Anche l'upload di ecj-bootstrap 3.2.1, sincronizzato da Debian. BR BR Etienne Goyer ha effettuato l'aggiornamento di Bazaar, lo strumento di controllo della distribuzione delle revisioni, alla versione 0.11. La nuova versione è più veloce ed ha molte altre caratteristiche. Ubuntu

Andrew Mitchell ha effettuato l'upload della nuova versione, la 0.2.1 di F-spot, l'applicazione della gestione delle foto. A parte la sistemazione di una grande quantità di anomalie, la versione fornisce il supporto per la scalabilità delle immagini quando le medesime vengono inviate via email, tramite l'esportazione in modalità Picasa. BR BR Nel campo della grafica, questa settimana ha visto l'upload di molti pacchetti. Frank Schoep ha effettuato l'upload di edgy-community-wallpapers 0.2-0, e più tardi nella medesima settimana, Daniel Holbach la versione 0.3 dello stesso pacchetto. Daniel ha anche effettuato l'upload di human-icon-theme 0.4, che aggiunge nuovi emblemi provenienti dal gruppo Artistico. Infine, Daniel ha effettuato l'upload di edgy-gdm-themes 0.4 e di ubuntu-sounds 0.5. I nuovi suoni di Ubuntu possono essere ascoltati sul sito: BR https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/61530 BR dove è stato scoperto che la specifica Teardown ha talmente abbreviato la procedura di chiusura del sistema che il suono di accompagnamento veniva sospeso troppo presto. Samuel Maftoul ha effettuato l'upload di telepathy-butterfly 0.1.1 BR BR In questa settimana è stato effettuato l'upload di altri tasselli del desktop di Ubuntu, tra cui il nuovo poppler 0.5.4 e rhythmbox 0.9.6. Sebastian Bacher ha effettuato entrambi gli upload, il nuovo Rhythmbox contiene alcune soluzioni alle anomalie DAAP, alla scrittura di ID3 tag, UI e miglioramenti a i18n e molto di più. BR E' stato effettuato anche in questa settimana l'upload di ubuntu-meta 1.26 e 1.27, il primo aggiunto al volo, libgl1-mesa-glx, linuxprinting.org-ppds, util-linux-locales durante lo spostamento di gnome-games verso l'affidamento. L'1.27 ha aggiunto avahi-daemon all'installazione di default. BR BR Una delle nuove applicazioni più interessanti in Edgy di questa settimana è backstep 0.3, uno strumento per disegnare le icone delle applicazioni minimizzate sul desktop. Kubuntu

In questa settimana ci sono stati due aggiornamenti dei meta-pacchetti di Kubuntu, entrambi eseguiti da Anthony Mercatante, 1.15 and 1.16. Il precedente ha aggiunto digikam ed ha eliminato dal desktop di Kubuntu kmplayer-konq-plugins e l'ultimo è ritornato sulle precedenti variazioni per la lettura dei plugins back-in.

Xubuntu

La settimana ha avuto inizio con il completamento da parte della collettività di Xubuntu della divisione del pacchetto file manager XFFM. Come tale Gauvain Pocentek e David Valot hanno effettuato l'upload di: BR xffm-samba 4.5.0 BR xffm-filemanager 4.5.0 BR xffm-gui 4.5.0 BR xffm-fstab 4.5.0 BR xffm-recent 4.5.0 BR xffm-icons 4.5.0 BR xffm-trash 4.5.0 BR xffm-proc 4.5.0. BR Alcuni giorni dopo Gauvain ha effettuato l'upload di xffm4 4.5.0, che è il nuovo meta-pacchetto modulare. BR BR XFFM non è l'unico pezzo di Xubuntu che ha subito modifiche in questa settimana. Jani Monoses ha effettuato l'upload del nuovo xubuntu-system-tools 2.15.5, che è una sezione del gnome-system-tools. Jani ha anche effettuato l'upload di: BR xfce4-dict-plugin 0.2.0 BR xfce4-mailwatch-plugin 1.0.1 BR xfwm4 4.3.99.1svn+r23289. BR Gauvain Pocentek ha effettuato l'upload della prima versione di xfce4-cpu-freq-plugin, 0.0.1. Due sono state, in questa settimana, le modifiche al meta-pacchetto di Xubuntu. La 2.14, con l'aggiunta al desktop di gxine, onboard e xfce4-dict-plugin. L'ultimo upload della settimana, 2.15 con l'aggiunta al desktop dello strumento system-config-printer.

Ichthux

Il gruppo Ichthux ha continuato il proprio lavoro in questa settimana. Raphael Pinson ha effettuato l'upload di: BR ichthux-meta 1.0ubuntu2 BR che naggiunge BR ichthux-artwork-usplash BR ichthux-default-settings BR e sword-language-pack-nl BR all'installazione di default.

Raphael Pinson uploaded ichthux-meta 1.0ubuntu2, which adds ichthux-artwork-usplash, ichthux-default-settings, and sword-language-pack-nl to the default install. Jordan Mantha also uploaded ichthux-docs 6.10, the initial upload of the documentation for this distro.

Benjamin Smedberg of Mozilla raised some concerns about the cathedral-like nature of Ubuntu (and any other distros) archives. He wondered about how Ubuntu can manage new applications and the ability for people to install from the "Bazaar", as he called it. Newsforge reports on Benetech, a charity whose mission is to use technology to improve the world. They use Kubuntu and Ubuntu on their desktops Ball cited Ubuntu's ease of setup and installation as the reason for the switch. "If you have to roll out 10 or 15 machines, Gentoo's [inconvenient]. Most of our machines are Kubuntu, but there are a couple of GNOME people in our organization."

ZDNet takes a look at Canonical as it gears up and shoots for profitability:

Canonical is the 65-employee start-up behind a popular version of Linux called "Ubuntu". The company is betting that it can win a place in the market using a strategy that dominant Linux seller Red Hat has dropped.

Red Hat offers two versions of Linux: Fedora Core and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Fedora Core is free, but relatively untested and unsupported by Red Hat, while RHEL is supported and certified, but must be purchased. With Canonical's Ubuntu, however, the free and supported versions are identical--the approach Red Hat abandoned in 2003.

"We believe that Ubuntu should be free to everyone--not just a trial version, but our very best version," said Christopher Kenyon, Canonical's business development manager. The South African company even ships free CDs anywhere in the world. Using that strategy, it expects profitability within 24 months, he added.

New features in Apport

Apport is a new tool in Edgy to allow users to collect backtraces, amongst other things. There were two major announcments about it this week. The first relates to duplicate bugs. Often a single bug will be duplicated many times. Rather than have lots of duplicates filed, it is better to redirect that person to a common bug. As such, Martin Pitt, the developer of Apport, has announced Bug Patterns. You can read more at https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-October/021502.html

The 2nd piece of news involves the retrace tool, which is used for developers to process backtraces after the fact. This allows the direct downloading of the ddebs (debs containing the debug symbols) and then rerun the stack trace to get better debugging symbols.
