Notizie Generali

Upstart in azione

Scott James Remnant ha dato il via, questa settimana alle innovazioni di Upstart, rendendolo “init” di default di Edgy. Gli utenti hanno a disposizione alcuni pacchetti nuovi:

  • startup-tasks - definizione delle applicazioni che debbono partire all’avvio del sistema

  • system-services – definizione dei servizi essenziali del sistema

  • questi due pacchetti sono l’"initscripts" di upstart

* upstart – daemon d’inizializzazione: event-based init daemon

  • upstart-compat-sysv – init di compatibilità per Sistemi operativi-V

Coordinatrice della Comunità Kubuntu

A Sarah Hobbs (Hobbsee), durante l’ultima riunione della Comunità, è stato assegnato il titolo di Coordinatrice della Comunità di Kubuntu. Chi volesse fornire il proprio supporto alla Comunità è invitato a “pingare” Hobbsee sul canale IRC che fornirà utili indicazioni su come iniziare.

Kubuntu Support Team

Il Gruppo di Supporto di Kubuntu è costituito da persone che con il loro entusiasmo stanno offrendo agli utenti un prodotto qualitativamente simile ad Ubuntu. Lavorano in collaborazione con altri gruppi per garantire la costruzione di pagine wiki, canali IRC, forum e la notifica di corrette istruzioni per l’analisi completa di Kubuntu.

Nuovo tema grafico in Edgy

Il Gruppo Artistico di Ubuntu ha lavorato duramente ed ha presentato un nuovo tema di default, visibile sul sito:

Nuove applicazioni in Edgy

GNOME 2.16 vede la luce questa settimana in Edgy. Gli Uploads sono iniziati il 3 settembre fino al 7 settembre. Sebastian e Daniel del Gruppo di uploading hanno iniziato il loro lavoro di buon’ora con l’intenzione di completare il pacchetto di GNOME. [BR] E’ stato risolto il problema della finestra di pop-up di richiesta di aggiornamento che appare all’introduzione di un CD con Ubuntu 4.10 in un sistema già aggiornato alla versione 5.10. [BR] Michael Vogt ha finalmente risolto il problema con notifica 0.43.1.[BR] Mattias Klose ha continuato il suo lavoro su Python 2.5, con l’uploading di una grande quantità di pacchetti che saranno operativi con la nuova versione del programma. Non è previsto l’inserimento per default di Python 2.5 in Edgy, in quanto non è stato ancora rilasciato, lo sarà in futuro tra gli archivi.

Michael Vogt ha preparato le sue raccomandazioni per gli spec della settimana. Con Colin Watson ha convertito il seed del desktop di Ubuntu per consentire agli utenti gli aggiornamenti del medesimo senza dover rimuovere tutto il meta-pacchetto. In futuro sarà disponibile anche per le versioni di Edubuntu, Kubuntu e Xubuntu.

Nuovi temi musicali di apertura e chiusura di Edgy sono stati aggiunti al pacchetto dei suoni. Pete Savage ha creato nuove musiche per accompagnare i temi di Ubuntu.

Aggiornamenti Edubuntu

LTSP si è arricchito ulteriormente in questa settimana. Oliver Grawert ha effettuato l’upload di ltsp 0.99, che attiva la sessione ed il login in LDM, gestore delle firme per “thin clients”. In aggiunta, nuovo codice è stato generato per Edgy, ltsp-dhcp-autogeneration, all’interno di ltsp 0.100, che comprende il lavoro del Gruppo Debian LTSP.

Pete Savage has being doing a great deal of work with the student control panel, a tool for teachers to be able to see and control their students desktops. With student-control-panel 0.4.1, his work of providing lockdown (via the GNOME lockdown tool, Pessulus), killing processes, sending messages and start applications on the students machines arrives.

Aggiornamenti Kubuntu

I pacchetti della prima versione di KDE 4 per Edgy sono stati messi a disposizione da ubuntu.org e saranno presto inseriti nell’archivio di Ubuntu. E’ un grande lavoro per i gruppi di lavoro di sviluppo e collaudo. Gli auguriamo buona fortuna. BR Altre informazioni sul sito:

Nelle setimane passate il Gruppo Guidance del KDE ha lavorato sull’operatività degli strumenti, con numerosi upload “straight-from-SVN” effettuati da numerosi programmatori di Kubuntu, tra cui Antony Mercatante. Sono stati impegnati anche nella ricerca di informazioni sulle impostazioni di sistema, nel miglioramento della configurazione della gamma degli strumenti in “displayconfig”, disponibili entrambi in Edgy. Aggiornamenti Xubuntu

Alla luce delle pubblicazioni recenti di Xfce 4.4 RC1, Jani Monoses e Gauvain Pocentek hanno effettuato gli upload delle versioni di xfdesktop e Thunar che contengono il supporto Trash in aggiunta alla risoluzione di numerosi bugs.

Progetti del Summer of Code

Un altro progetto Summer of Code è stato aggiunto agli archivi in questa settimana: questa volta è il turno di Chris Jones' onBoard 0.81 (precedentemente conosciuto come SOK , ovvero Simple Onscreen Keyboard). BR E’ stato effettuato l’upload anche di una libreria della guida per l’applicazione virtkey 0.41, che emula la pressione dei tasti di una tastiera. BR Sempre in questa settimana Evan Dandrea ha effettuato l’upload dell’assistente alla migrazione 0.2, che aggiunge il supporto all’ubiquità dell’installazione del live CD. BR Il Willow NG, strumento di filtraggio per il web, è stato aggiunto, grazie al contributo di Robert Day, al KDE ed è parte del progetto Ichthux. Sarà presto disponibile in Edgy come willowng-config-kde.

Novità su Launchpad

La settimana ha portato un grande quantità di modifiche in Launchpad, che condivideremo con I lettori.

Bug tracking

Iniziamo con il richiamare la vostra attenzione su una delle caratteristiche del nostro bug tracker. La pagina delle ricerche avanzate offre un insieme di opzioni interessanti per coloro che si occupano di un distribuzione. Il filtro si basa sullo status del bug in remoto e sul rapporto dell’upstream collegato al vostro bug. Launchpad ora offre tre opzioni di filtro: * Bugs che necessitano di un upstream * Ubuntu URL: http://tinyurl.com/oavke

La prima opzione è molto utile al Gruppo bug triage: segnala i bug che sono stati identificati come upstream , ma che non hanno ancora avuto la minima attenzione.

Questa opzione è utile per coloro che si occupano della manutenzione dei pacchetti: segna, infatti, i bug che sono stati marcati e risolti oppure respinti. Questi bug hanno la precedenza per l’attività relativa ai pacchetti con lo scopo di sanarli ed inserirli in una nuova versione.

L’opzione elenca i bugs non soggetti ad upstream. E’ attualmente la maggioranza di quelli esistenti in Ubuntu. BR Quest’opzione fornisce una numerazione ai bug tag, con la creazione di un tag di conferma, che consente una ricerca approfondita basata sui tag. Viene attivata una statistica di quelli ancora aperti.

Traduzioni

Sul fronte delle traduzioni, siamo lieti di annunciare l’apertura delle traduzioni di Edgy in Rosetta! Dopo aver sistemato i dati iniziali e la sistemazione di un bilione di schemi e traduzioni, Rosetta si presenta ai traduttori con un nuova distribuzione su cui operare, senza perdere nulla del lavoro effettuato per la distribuzione Dapper. Lo status delle traduzioni è visibile sul sito

Rosetta evidenzia l’identità del traduttore di ogni stringa per consentire ai revisori di misurare la quantità di lavoro effettuato, di contattare il traduttore con loscopo di migliorare la qualità della traduzione

Supporto

A number of important changes also went live on the support tracker this week. If you visit the Ubuntu page for tickets at:

You'll notice that the display is now formatted using a table, which provides a much more compact display of tickets. It also allows for simple searching and ordering through tickets, one of the top requested features for the support tracker; as an example you can see open tickets sorted newest first at:

New support requests now go through a guided process, which first tries to locate similar reports, avoiding duplicates and helping users get answers faster. You can test this for yourself on our staging server:

and entering a summary; the next step will list similar tickets, if they are found.

Also new in the support area is the fact that Karma is properly attributed to people providing answers and updating tickets; the listings will soon be updated to include the top contributors in this area as well.

Other noteworthy updates: the official URL for the specification tracker has been changed to http://features.launchpad.net/ as part of our branding cleanup. A /very/ serious amount of work went into refactoring and cleanup of Soyuz, our distribution management system, and we are currently in the process of running our first smoketest to verify that the changes were successful (and we caught a performance regression already). On the branch management front you can now safely change branch metadata without causing imports to fail; this should make the feature more robust over time and is one of the first practical benefits of the bzr transition.

Finally, handling of OpenPGP and SSH keys has been overhauled and sanitized; if you had trouble registering keys, or signing the Code of Conduct, now would be a great time to test and provide us with feedback.

La Stampa dice

Media watchers may have noticed that Forbes is paying an unusual amount of attention to Linux and open source software. That positive trend continues with their look at Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu:

"Ubuntu now has 4 million users, half of which are governments, universities and a smattering of businesses. It adds new ones at a rate of 8% per month. After its public release in October 2004, Ubuntu quickly deposed Red Hat's Fedora as the most popular version of Linux on DistroWatch, a Web site that caters to Linux users. Ubuntu works in 22 languages, and Canonical, the company Shuttleworth set up to distribute his software, will send a free Ubuntu CD anywhere in the world. New users rave about the simple user interface, which has gained recent converts in a couple of well-known bloggers who switched from Apple Computer's OS X."

While we applaud Forbes for covering Free Software and Ubuntu, we thought we might correct a few of their facts. Ubuntu is installed on somewhere between 6 and 7 million computers (the exact number is hard to tell) in a great many languages, about 30 of which are fairly complete, and the reigning champion on Distrowatch, until Ubuntu came along, was Mandrake (later Mandriva) not Red Hat or Fedora.

Tectonic interviews Canonical's education programme manager Richard Weideman in its look at the prospects for open source in education.

"We are also participating in high level projects and studies, funded by organisations such as the European Union, to build blueprints for the next generation. These collaborations of education experts and learning culture experts, alongside technical organisations like ourselves, take the benefits of an open source future for education as a given," he says.

"Right now, open source is now firmly on the education agenda; it is no longer a fringe element but a cornerstone. This is the year to be on the lookout for large scale deployment and successes."

Melissa Draper of counter fame gets a mention in the Sydney Morning Herald, in an article that spends a large amount of time telling people that they have choice, and there is support in all shapes and sizes.

"While it is hard to estimate how many everyday users have defected from Windows or Apple software to join the open-source movement, Ubuntu (pronounced oo-boon-too) has emerged as one of the Linux desktop packages of choice for those looking for a basic desktop alternative."

Caratteristica della settimana - Katapult

Katapult is an application for KDE, designed to allow faster access to applications, bookmarks, music and other many items. It is plugin-based, so it can launch anything that is has a plugin for. Its display is driven by plugins as well, so its appearance is completely customizable. It was inspired by Quicksilver for OS X.

Simply by pressing alt+spacebar, you can launch Katapult and then just start typing, for example in the screen shot "ka" was typed and brought up the obvious choice of KDE's kate, it can also handle math equations on the fly, no need to actually launch kcalc. Give it a shot, you'll find it a great asset to your KDE toolbox.

To keep you informed, here are some of the upcoming events in the Ubuntu and Free Software world.

Hungarian Ubuntu Conference 2006

The FSF Foundation and the Hungarian Ubuntu Community are presenting the first Hungarian Ubuntu Conference on the 28th October. Many well-known developers have accepted our invitation to present in English, on various Ubuntu related projects: Mario Đanić (Edubuntu Developer), Ante Karamatić (Ubuntu Developer, Ubuntu Printing Team), Jani Monoses (Xubuntu Lead Developer), and Raphaël Pinson (Kubuntu Core Developer, Itchtux Lead Developer).

The conference will be held on the 28th October, 2006 (Saturday) in Building 'I' of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest, Hungary. We also plan to have the presentations streamed online, so that anybody can watch in real time. Stay tuned for further info on that!

Software Freedom Day

September 16th is Software Freedom Day! Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The goal of this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere! The non-profit company Software Freedom International provides guidance in organizing SFD, but volunteer teams around the world organize their own SFD events to impact their own communities.
