Da Ubuntu 8.04 domina domina il nativo plug & play del server X. I dispositivi di input possono essere aggiunti, messi in funzione ed utilizzati senza andare ad editare il file /etc/X11/xorg.conf e senza riavviare il server grafico. Fino ad Ubuntu 9.10 è stato utilizzato HAL, da Ubuntu 10.04 è cessato il suo utilizzo.
