Introduzione
L'idea fondante di Ubuntu è quella di avere un sistema operativo accessibile e usabile al numero maggiore possibile di persone. Siano tra loro differenti per età, nazionalità o per abilità disiche. Ubuntu include, infatti, una buona piattaforma che sfrutta tecnologie assistive e si impegna a farla funzionare su i programmi che girano su di esso. Questi programmi, come tutto il sistema operativo stesso, sono liberamente installabili e gratuiti.
Lente di ingrandimento e assistente vocale
Inserito nel Desktop GNOME, Orca è un software che sfrutta la sintesi vocale e l'ingrandimento dello schermo.
Cos'è Orca?
Orca è una applicazione libera, open source, flessibile ed estensibile per persone con deficienza visuale. Usando varie combinazioni di sintesi vocale, braille e ingrandimento, Orca offre accesso ad applicazioni e toolkit che supportano il AT-SPI (es. Gnome Desktop). Lo sviluppo di Orca è portato avanti da Accessibility Program Office of Sun Microsystems , Inc. con le contribuzioni della comunità.
Aprire Oca con Ubuntu
Se avete Ubuntu già installato basterà premere alt+f2 e scrivere orca e premere invio.
Aprire Orca dal Live CD
1. Dopo aver scaricato l'immagine del CD e averla masterizzata su un CD o DVD, inserire il supporto nel lettore e avviare il PC.
2. Per abilitare le tecnologie assistive, premere f5. Questa operazione farà apparire diverse opzioni modificabili legate all'accessibilità: a. nessuna; b. Alto contrasto; c. Lente di ingrandimento; d. screen reader; e. modificatori della tastiera; f. tastiera sullo schermo; 3. se volete usare Orca, ad esempio come screen reader, premete 3 per selezionare l'opzione screen reader e premete invio. A questo punto tornerete alle opzioni di avvio, premete di nuovo invio per avviare Ubuntu.
4. In pochi minuti, il sistema operativo sarà avviato con Orca, dovrete sentire il messaggio che dice "Benvenuti in Orca, preferenze di Orca, Generale pagina."
5. The CD drive should also stop spinning at this point. If the CD drive stopped spinning and you did not hear a greeting from Orca, you might need to try to reboot from the CD and repeat the steps for selecting the Screen Reader.
6. Orca il sistema operativo è avviato e Orca funzionate, attualmente è aperto il pannello di controllo delle impostazioni di Orca che è suddiviso in più pagine.
Alto contrasto
Ubuntu è distribuito con diversi temi ad alto contrasto comprensivi anche di cursori del mouse abbinati. Per attivare un nuovo tema premere sistema->preferenze->temi (il menu è accessibile da tastiera premendo alt+f1).
Modificatori della tastiera
Il desktop GNOME è corredato di molte scorciatoie per la tastiera e per facilitare l'uso del mouse. Itasti modificatori (shift , alt , ctrl) rimangono attivi fino alla pressione del successivo tasto dando la possibilità, qundi, di legare ad una certa azione anche le lettere maiuscole. Altre opzioni fanno riferimento ad un abbassamento della reazione alla pressione di un tasto e alla possibilità di collegare determinate azioni del mouse alla tastiera.
Queste opzioni possono essere attivate tramite il pannello presente nel menu sistema->preferenze->tastiera.
Tastiera sullo schermo
Ubuntu 6.10 includes the onBoard on-screen keyboard, a lightweight text-entry application, extensible through macros, scripts and custom layouts.
Also available is Gnome On-screen Keyboard (GOK) which, in addition to basic text entry, also provides facilities for controlling the entire desktop behavior through the on-screen keyboard by gathering information about other applications and sending them control signals through the Gnome assistive technology framework AT-SPI.
Software Click
For users that cannot click with a hardware button, there is an utility named [WWW] Mousetweaks
- that enables them to perform the various clicks by software. Its development started during the summer of 2007 and is not available in the Ubuntu archives
yet. For i386 and amd64 architectures running Ubuntu 7.10 you can install it (at your own risk) from my Personal Package Archive until it is officially in Ubuntu. Simply add the following repositories to the Synaptic Package Manager:

In fact, Mousetweaks offers the following new features to the user:
• Systemwide software click, usually called dwelling
• Systemwide simulated right click through a click and hold of the left button (of course, for left-handed mouse users, the terms left and right have to be inverted)
• Area on the panel to temporarily lock the pointer (provided by a panel applet)
Activating preinstalled tools
If you install the Ubuntu system after booting the Ubuntu Desktop CD with an accessibility option as described above, those features will also be preconfigured to start by default on your newly installed system.
The most common accessibility tools such as Orca and onBoard are preinstalled on any standard Ubuntu system and are easy to activate. The screen reader, magnifier and on-screen keyboard are all activated using the Gnome Assistive Technology Preferences panel, Found in the System Menu under Preferences.
Using Onboard and Mousetweaks at GDM
For Ubuntu 7.10 users, it is possible to configure GDM so that onboard and mousetweaks are available during the GDM session.
