| A Your sound should work. Don't buy anything until you have made sure it is a hardware problem. It may be a configuration problem. Try changing the sound-related settings in the menu. Since you get the test tones, I think it is a problem with the programs you are using. Go to the settings of the program, and change the sound settings there. Even if you do end up getting a new card, you can probably get one for about $20 (~£10). If you don't know how to install a card, you could get a usb sound device. | The backported programs probably have unresolved dependencies, so a program you have installed relies on one version of another program, but an update relies on a newer version. It could even degrade performance, as the read/write heads have to move to separate sections of the disk to access the required files. Separate partitions would be good for protecting against file corruption, though not quite as good as separate drives. |
