Imparerete come avviare il vostro Windows XP (già installato) da una macchina virtuale sotto Linux

Introduzione

Immaginiamo un sistema con 2 partizioni, una con Linux Ubuntu e una con Windows XP utile per installare quei programmi a cui proprio non si può rinunciare sia per utilità che per prestazioni comparate ad una emulazione sotto Wine. Perchè creare una macchina virtuale ed installarci un altra copia di Windows XP se possiamo semplicemente creare una macchina virtuale ed avviare la partizione di Windows già esistente sul nostro Hard disk?

VANTAGGI:

• Non bisogna perdere tempo a reinstallare tutto il sistema Operativo e i vari programmi.
• Non si hanno 2 Windows Xp sulla stessa macchina (uno virtuale e uno nativo), risparmiando spazio.

SVANTAGGI:

• Possono verificarsi problemi di inconsistenza di dati, se non agite usando la testa,

Premessa

Non si verificheranno problemi, ma se dovessero verificarsi siete responsabili delle scelte che fate, quindifate BACKUP prima di proseguire oltre. Vi consiglio di avere un HD diviso in una maniera simile:

• Partizione Windows (Funzionante con tutti i programmi e driver installati)
• Partizione Linux Ubuntu (Non necessariamente Ubuntu, ma la guida è per utenti Ubuntu)
• Swap (non sempre necessaria)
• Partizione Dati

N.B. Nella "Partizione Dati", la più grande del vostro Hard Disk, mettete tutti i vostri dati personali: Foto, Film, Mp3 e tutto quello che avete sul Desktop e nei Documenti di XP. In futuro per vostra sicurezza usate sempre questo approccio per una maggiore flessibilità in caso si verifichino brutte situazioni.

Cosa vi serve?

• Vmware Workstation Linux anche in versione trial 30 giorni

N.B. Potete procuravi una versione recente dal sito di VMWare, ma attenzione non si tratta del player ma della versione Server per creare macchine virtuali. Il player magari sarà utile in seguito per avviare la vostra macchina virtuale.

Il sottoscritto ha utilizzato: Vmware Workstation v5.5.1.19175 Linux

Prepariamo Linux

Installiamo il necessario per compilare sotto linux (se già non lo avete).

sudo apt-get install make gcc

Ci procuriamo gli Header del Kernel, i linux-headers

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` 

Attenzione gli apici notate la differenza. (ALTGR + Apici normali) se proprio non riuscite fate "uname-r" a parte e quello che esce (la versione del kernel) sostituitelo esempio: apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.15-23-386

Installiamo Vmware

Scompattiamo il tar.gz di Vmware, ed entriamo nella directory (è possibile che le directory si chiamino in maniera diversa)

sudo tar xvf vmware-player-distrib.tar.gz

cd vmware-player-distrib

Lanciamo lo script e partiamo con l'installazione, dovremo rispondere ad una trentina di domande che sono un pò un chiodo ma che con la maggiorparte ci basterà dare un colpo di INVIO.

/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.15-23-386/include (la versione del kernel è quella che esce scrivendo uname -r)

Configuriamo VMWARE e la macchina virtuale

Apriamo Vmware:

sudo vmware

Inseriamo ora il seriale se ne abbiamo uno.
